I Empower Mid-Career Managers and Executives to Design Careers That are In Sync with Their Faith, Beliefs, and Values. The Process I Use...While I list these as steps sometimes they happen at the same time rather than in a formal "first this, then that" way. Step 1 is to get an understanding of where you are and what brought you to this place. Step 2 is to figure out where you want to be (this is sometimes harder than it sounds since it's typically been ages since we've thought seriously about it). Step 3 is to understand what's been holding you back from making the changes you want to make. Step 4 is creating the strategy that will get you where you want to be. Step 5 is working together to make it all happen. There are......assessments we may use. ...exercises and activities I'll recommend. ...books or articles I'll encourage you to read. ...resources I'll share. Everybody's different and we'll spend more time on some issues than others; and while I have actual programs I've put together and am working on more, how you progress through the program depends on you and your situation. How I Work...The details of how I work are rooted in my philosophies about careers, work, and life along with my values. I've built my business on those foundational beliefs. I work with clients virtually.
I am an environmentalist and a home-body. Technology allows me to work with people outside of my geographic area without using gas. It saves us both time and energy. We use the phone, email, fax, and webcams (No kidding...I do interview coaching via webcam!) My Philosophy About Careers... I believe that work should be anchored on our greatest values and built on our core gifts. We do our best work and get the most enjoyment out of work when we're focusing most of our effort and energy on tasks that use our natural strengths.
I don't think we can separate our spiritual self from our work self. We're people of faith 24-hours a day and our work lives and actions should be in sync. I'm not talking about preaching at work. I'm talking about living and working in a way that's consistent to what you say you believe.
Your employer isn't in charge of your career, nor are they responsible for your development. The days of 40 years at one employer are over. While your employer would certainly benefit from helping you grow and learn new skills they don't have to do it. And sitting around waiting for them to do it isn't productive. It's your career and your life.
Always be prepared for a change and learn to be flexible.Disasters happen. Companies get bought and sold. Jobs get eliminated and jobs open up. Whole industries sink. Because of that you're resume should always be updated so you can capitalize on opportunities that present themselves. While loyalty to your company is admirable, you owe it to yourself and your family to stay tuned in and be able to read the handwriting on the wall.
We're happiest when our values match the values of our employers. If you're unhappy where you are this is most likely the root of the problem. If your company allows bullying behavior and doesn't treat its employees well, the company is saying it values that type of behavior regardless of what the leadership says. If that's what it's like there and you're not happy, your unhappiness is a signal that you value different behavior.
You're responsible for creating the well-rounded, happy life you want.If you're not happy with your life change it. If you feel you have no choice but to work an outrageous number of hours because that's what's expected and rewarded, then find an employer where that's not an expectation.
The person who gets the job is the person who best communicates that they're the best person for the job.The ability to clearly present our thoughts is one of the most important skills we can possess. So many wonderful people don't present themselves well in an interview (or a meeting) which leaves them stuck where they are. This is a skill that can be learned even if you have a naturally shy personality.
My Values...My faith. My spiritual growth is important and I'm always working to keep my life centered on God, my core beliefs, and my other values. My family. I work to live, I don't live to work. I tried hard not to work on weekends or holidays and I work few late nights. This is one of the reasons I've built a virtual business -- so I can be home. The environment. I believe we're stewards of the Earth. I do my best to treat it gently. This is another reason I work virtually as much as possible. I leverage technology as much as I can. Helping others. I first taught someone "officially" when I was 16 and was asked to teach a fellow student how to play tenor saxophone. As a kid, friends constantly sought me out for advice. My mom always said "There's just something about you that makes people want to talk." I guess she was right 'cause as I got older that continued to happen until it became a centerpiece of whatever job I had. My mission is to help others become the best they can be. Giving to others. I donate my time, talents, and money to my church and to my favorite charities: The Atlantic City Rescue Mission, The Food Bank, The Humane Society (nationally and locally), and various animal and environmental causes. 10% of my income goes to these organizations and as much time as I have to spare. What Makes Me Unique...I'm a former recruiter, trainer, and human resources professional. I've interviewed well over 10,000 people in my career and trained thousands of employees at every level. I've taught hundreds of supervisors, managers, and executives how to conduct effective interviews. I've taught hundreds of people how to write resumes, complete internal job applications, and interview well. I've acted as an internal (and external) consultant to small and large corporations helping them maximize their profits by effectively leveraging their biggest asset -- their employees. I've worked in different industry segments (nonprofit, for profit, education) and industries. I'm a service person at heart and even though I have worked in manufacturing I only work with people in service industries (especially hospitality and business services). My biggest talent is my ability to teach and explain things. When I was the training manager at a growing international casino hotel company I was sent to sister properties to train their employees and share our processes and culture. I had department heads insist on only having me conduct their training. In grad school I had classmates who would ask me to "translate" what the professors said. I've struggled with my faith. I've tried to figure out what my purpose is, what my mission is, and what role my faith should play in all of that. I still work every day to keep my faith at the center of my life. It isn't easy and I understand the struggle. I've worked for others while building my business and I'm not ashamed of that. I'm not someone who's going to act like I was born a successful businessperson. If you're trying to do the same I can relate to what you're going through and help you keep your sanity while you do it all. Ready to get started right now?
