”Pray to Your Father, Who is in the Secret Place; and Your Father, Who Sees in Secret, Will Reward You Openly."”
Matthew 6:6
If you’re like most people, you talk to your friends around the office pretty frequently. You email little comments back and forth about the craziness going on in your department. You call to confirm what time to meet for lunch. You say hi when you pass the other person’s desk on the way to the copier. You probably talk to those you don’t like very much pretty often too. I know – you have to. How often do you talk to God? I don’t just mean formal prayers, but actually talks. He is
"Our Father" after all.
Talking to our friends helps us feel close to them. It helps us deal with our problems when they make us laugh or when they sympathize with us and encourage us. We’ve all been on both ends of the “I just needed to hear a friendly voice” phone call. And it really has helped. We make sure we thank our friends for the joy and strength they give us.
So how frequently do you talk to God?
Is it only at night as you drift off to sleep? Is it just one more chore to check off on your “to do” list?Just as the more you talk to a friend, the closer you feel to the person, the more you talk to God, the closer you feel to Him. It helps me become more in tuned to listening for His voice and aware of His presence. If it’ll help, try talking in a schedule and as it becomes more natural for you, add to it over time: First thing in the morning – before you even get out of bed – thank the Lord for giving you a peaceful night, for keeping you safe, and for anything else you can think of. Look for opportunities to thank Him and ask for help as you move through your morning routine. Ask for His blessing on your breakfast…to keep you safe as you drive where you’re going…review your agenda with Him and ask for His guidance and wisdom. Check in with Him often during the day. At night, thank Him for the day and all that you accomplished (because we’d be nothing without Him, right?) and ask for a fitful night’s sleep for you and your family. Soon you’ll find yourself having a regular conversation with Him. And I do mean “conversation.” You’ll begin to hear, feel, and see His responses throughout your day. You’ll feel and know His love and grace on an even deeper level.
