"From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain."
(Jeremiah 6:13)
Greed and business life just seem to go together, don’t they? Is it wrong to want a better job…more money…more responsibility? God never told us not to make money. Jesus never said we shouldn’t attempt to improve our situation. But what happens in our pursuit of obtaining a promotion, making more money, and expanding our power at work? Often, we lose site of what we’re supposed to be working for – performing the work that God has for us to do and earning a place in His Kingdom. Look at how crazed modern life is. You work more than 9 hours each day. You may commute as much as an hour each way. When you get home, you’re stressed and exhausted. You have chores to do and family responsibilities before you finally get to bed. You sleep a few hours (never enough it seems) and get up and do it again. Where does God fit in all of that? We create these complicated, expensive lives and make ourselves crazy trying to keep up with or stay ahead of others. We can lose our focus and become lost as we concentrate on achievement rather than on the creation of a whole and balanced life that gives glory to God. Greed keeps us from a close relationship with our Lord by putting other things at the center of our focus and the center of our lives. He is supposed to be the center of everything. We’ve got to somehow balance the needs and realities of living in this world with our dreams of having an eternal life with God in Heaven.
