Some Resources & Tools to Help You Live Your Faith at Work and in Life

Books

The Congruent Life

I first read this book in the mid- to late '90s. Some people don't like it but I thought it was very powerful. It really helped me see that what I wanted and what I had were very different. It took me a few more years to get up the courage to do something about it.

Stages of the Soul

This beautiful little book helped me understand the root of career dissatisfaction. I really believe the unhappiness we feel is caused by several things -- one of which is our soul crying out over the misalignment between our God-given mission and what we're actually doing. This book helped me articulate that.

How Full is Your Bucket

Another insightful little book. This gem is from Tom Rath and his grandfather, the late Donald O. Clifton. It's just incredibly powerful.

It explains the power of negativity and the opportunity we all have to be forces for good in our lives, including at work. The truth is that negativity kills. Literally. This book can help you see the need to get negativity out of your life and how you can change your behavior to be even more positive.

Now, Discover Your Strengths

Marcus Buckingham and the late Donald O. Clifton share the first book based on The Gallup Organizations' study of millions of people and their strengths. A great book that helps readers identify their strengths and sort of gives you permission to focus on those strengths. It encourages you to grow your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. Now, if only the corporate universe would embrace this concept.

I had been encouraging clients to pick this up but I'll start recommending the new version (Strengthsfinder 2.0...see below).

Strengthsfinder 2.0

The updated version of Strengthsfinder and book. I haven't read this version yet beyond the sampling on Amazon's website; but what I saw looked very good. Author, Tom Rath, has included tips on how to use your particular strengths category in your life with a focus on balance.

Websites

General Career Help

This career site isn't pretty but it's been dishing out great information since 1994. Check out the Riley Guide.

Good Morning America's resident career expert, Tory Johnson, runs this site. The focus is on women but there's lots of great career information for everyone

Post a resume or look for a job

Check out Yahoo's job board and post your resume on Yahoo! HotJobs

There are lots of specialty job boards out there and one of those might be good for you. Here are a few:

If you love sports and hate your job, check out this site JobsInSports.com for sports employment opportunities. The site charges a subscription fee but by doing that they attract serious candidates and serious employers. A one-week trial is just 9.95; but only you can decide if that's right for you.

Dice.com is a site for tech people. They have a link to a site for jobs that require a security clearance if you have one.

Fun Stuff

Who can't use a break now and then, huh?

Here are some of my favorite sites:

I love to send cards via snail mail but sometimes only an e-card will do. In that case, I love surprising someone with a Dancing Doughboy card!

I also send e-cards from Hallmark

I love to bake and Nestle has one of my favorite sites.

Like alot of people, I like good recipes that are easy and fast to make. Kraft Foods' website and the site for Rachel Ray's magazine are two of my usual haunts.

"Can you spare 7 minutes a month for God?"

In the time it takes to walk to the soda machine and back to your desk, you can read The Mustard Seed. Each issue of this twice monthly e-zine delivers thought-provoking articles, simple tips, and great resources to help you focus on God at work and apply your faith on the job.
